Pop the hood on some of literature’s best short fiction and see what makes these stories work. Novelist Michael Jerome Plunkett will guide students through a variety of strategies and exercises to hone their writer’s eye when reading literature. Join us to see some of your favorite stories in an entirely new light. For fans of George Saunders, Salman Rushdie, Jamaica Kincaid, and more!


Michael Jerome Plunkett is a writer from Long Island. He served in the United States Marine Corps and after working in the financial industry for Fidelity Investments and Morgan Stanley for several years began pursuing fiction writing as a career. He leads the Patrol Base Abbate Book Club which has hosted guests such as Sebastian Junger, Ocean Vuong, and Karl Marlantes. He is the Executive Director of the Literature of War Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to building libraries on military bases. He hosts the LitWar Podcast which has featured guests such as Elliot Ackerman, Phil Klay, and Steven Pressfield. He was a 2021 VCCA Fellow. His writing has been published or is forthcoming in The War Horse, Leatherneck Magazine, Coffee or Die, Dirtbag Magazine, and Lethal Minds Journal.
