DRC's Fall 2021 Online Writing Workshop [Guidelines & Info]

Dead Reckoning’s Mission Statement is to encourage literacy as a component of a positive lifestyle. It is in this vein that we are pleased to announce our first Online Writers Workshop.

The DRC Online Fiction Workshop will take place this Fall with 12 participants  over the span of 6 weeks on Google Classrooms. Juried participants will be selected on the basis of a flash fiction piece, no longer than 1,000 words, that will be evaluated by the editors of DRC and the instructor of the course.

you must follow all of these or your work will not be considered

  • Submission dates: July 2nd - July 5th.
  • Literary Fiction only. No genre fiction.
  • Please submit work in English only.
  • 1,000 word count maximum (Flash Fiction or something part of something larger)
  • Previously published work is okay, but if you are accepted to the workshop we ask that you choose to work with a polished, unpublished story.
  • $20 reading fee per entry allows up to two stories that still must be a 1,000 words or fewer. (Please note: If you are selected to participate in the workshop, this will be applied towards the cost of workshop.)
  • All submissions must be made via Submittable.
  • International submissions are allowed.
  • Please double-space your submission and use Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
  • Do not include any identifying information on your document.
  • Dead Reckoning Collective Online Fiction Workshop submissions are open to all writers. However, it is DRC’s practice to only publish the work of Veteran writers. Part of our mission is to close the civ/mil divide.

The editors of Dead Reckoning Collective will select 12 writers to move forward to the DRC Online Writer’s Workshop in the Fall. These submissions will be blind-reviewed by our acquisitions team. Meaning, we will not know who submitted the writing until after the selections have been made. This takes out all bias and allows the writing to speak for itself. Flash fiction submissions will be read after the deadline. Notifications will go out to selected participants on August 2nd.

The Online Writing Workshop will cost $350, with financial assistance if needed and scholarship/sponsorship opportunities.

This online workshop will allow you to work closely with a Creative Writing instructor and other writers as we dive into the Craft of Fiction Writing- character development, plot, structure, point of view – while challenging each other in readings, discussion, critical workshops, and generative sessions. We will also discuss the process behind editing and publication.

More information on the workshop will be given to those selected.

Selected workshop participants will also be granted:

  • Consideration for publication with Coffee Or Die Magazine.
  • Consideration for publication with Soflete.
  • Consideration for publication with Dead Reckoning Collective.
  • A welcome package from DRC and our sponsors to prepare you for the workshop.
  • Clout, obviously.
  • And 1 selected 'winner' will receive a $500 prize.
